3dsmax - VRay to Maxwell Scene Converter

Vray is a big program with a lot of history which has generated a huge ecosystem of plugins, 3D scenes, models collections, packs, etc. around it. In order to make the life easier for our users, we have developed this scene converter so you can benefit from that ecosystem. We know no converter is perfect, but this will definitely help a lot. We have tried to translate as many things as possible, so you can expect a fairly good translation of most of the materials, lights and environments.

You can launch the converter by clicking on this button from the toolbar:

Vray to Maxwell scene converter button

It will open this window:

Converter window

In order to make it work, you must have Vray for 3dsmax installed, however, you don’t need to have it licensed (a trial version could do), so 3dsmax can read the materials and all the features of the Vray scene.

Global Settings

  • Work on selected only, will make the converter work only on selected objects; this is meant for the case in which you import a model which includes Vray materials into a Maxwell scene. In this case, only the selected lights and materials will be converted to Maxwell

Incompatible maps settings

The converter will try to bake any incompatible map the Vray scene is using into square bitmaps in the format and with the dimension specified in this area. It will store the generated maps in the folder specified in the path box.

Status and Info

Here you will be informed about what is the converter doing. If you want a complete list of what has been done you can click on Log button.

Converter button

When you click this button, the converter will run, Maxwell will be set as current render engine and all the materials, lights and environments will be converted to their closest Maxwell version.
