MXM Gallery FAQ

1. Where are the downloaded materials?

The different plugins may behave in slightly different ways; you may find more specific information by looking at your plugin's documentation pages (Plugins). However, if you use the MXED or Maxwell Studio, the materials will be downloaded by default to a temporal folder.

Nevertheless, we suggest customizing its download folder from their Preferences panel > MXM Gallery section.

From the MXED Preferences you can set an “Alternative folder” where all the materials will be stored after the download (each in its subfolder).

From Maxwell Studio, you can choose an Alternative folder in the same way but also choose to download in the project folder (that is where the MXS file is stored).

2. Downloaded MXM material gives 'Missing Textures' error.

This happens because the user who uploaded the MXM to the material gallery placed the textures in a folder relevant only to their machine, so on your machine, MXED won't be able to find the textures in those paths.

Normally, the material’s textures are downloaded next to the MXM file inside a folder called “textures”. Maxwell should be able to locate the textures automatically in that folder.

The MXED, Maxwell Render and Maxwell Studio will look in the following paths to find the textures of a material:

  • in the same folder where the MXM is located

  • in a 'textures' subfolder where the MXM is located

  • in the project folder (ie where the MXS file is located)

  • in a “textures” subfolder where the MXS is located

  • in the texture paths specified in Maxwell Render/ Maxwell Studio preferences and three subfolders deep. To set these paths, go to:

    • File>Preferences>Paths (Maxwell Render)

    • File>Preferences>Materials>Textures (Maxwell Studio)

If you want Maxwell to locate and save the current texture locations (loading it will be faster) you only have to open the material in the MXED and save it.

In any case, the material editor includes a “Fix Textures Path” tool that can be found in its File menu and will let you select the folder containing the textures of the material.

Yes, all the files included with the materials that can be downloaded from our online MXM Gallery can be used in any project you want. It doesn’t matter if it’s for personal or commercial use. You can even use them outside any Maxwell-related project or without owning a Maxwell license (for example, when using a trial or demo license).

You are not allowed to resell the files or materials themselves in any way, but you are allowed to use them to create your own personal or commercial visualization projects.
