Motion vector channel

Motion vector channel

The Motion Vector channel outputs a color channel that represents object movement in the scene. Red/Green values in the map indicate amount of motion in screen space. This channel can be used by certain post-production plug-ins to calculate a 2D motion blur which in many cases is sufficient for a motion blur effect.

Please note that using the motion vector channel in post-production has some limitations compared with Maxwell's true 3D motion blur, which are inherent to a motion vector channel. Some of the limitations are:

  • no motion blur in reflections (the motion vector channel only works for objects themselves, not also reflections of objects in mirrors etc.)
  • no 3D motion blur - for example a propeller spinning that is not perpendicular to the camera plane
  • no lighting effects from motion blurred emitters - for example a candle flame moving during a long exposure that casts light on its environment as it moves

When the Motion channel is checked in Render Options, Maxwell will disable real motion blur in the render.
