In case your computer is damaged or crushed by meteorites, or you change the network card in the computer, or you simply want to move the RLM licensing server to another computer:

  1. Uninstall first the RLM License Server from your computer. Otherwise there could be conflicts if you have two or more RLM License Servers running in the same network.

  2. You need to then install the RLM License Server on the new computer, so use the Maxwell installer and make sure to check the "RLM License Server" in the installer. Full install instructions can be found here.

  3. Once the installer finishes, run Maxwell and the license activator will appear. Choose the option "Activate the license manager" and type in your license key you received via email when you purchased Maxwell Render.

  4. On some systems it is necessary to reboot in order for the license server to run properly, so please reboot your computer.

  5. Now the license server should be running on this computer. You can check this by opening a browser window and typing: localhost:5054. The RLM License Server interface should appear.

  6. On the other computers, you need to re-license Maxwell so they know to connect to this new license server. Open Maxwell and the license activator should appear, because Maxwell doesn't know anymore where the license server is running. Choose "Connect to a license manager already running", click Next, and in the following window type in the name or IP of the new computer. You can leave the port at the default 5053 if you haven't changed it when installing the license server. Click Connect and Maxwell should now connect to the new license server. It will also save a .lic file on this computer which only holds one line:

HOST computer
  1. HOST computer name, or IP] ANY 5053. It tells Maxwell on which computer the license server is running and which port to use for communication. Please see FAQ nr 1 above for the location of this .lic file on different OS.

Info

You can move/activate your floating license in this way for a total of 3 times. If you've already re-activated it 3 times, please contact us using the Sales form on the Customer Portal.

In Mac you usually have two different locations for license files:

Node-locked licenses go to: Users/Home/Maxwell
as well as maxwell_license.lic file which tells Maxwell where to look for the RLM

Floating licenses go to: Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/Licenses

The thing is the RLM is also capable of serving node-locked files to a particular hostID, so you only have to copy your maxwell_myproduct.lic to this folder: Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/Licenses and restart the rlm (or the computer) so it picks the new license file.

We have made some changes in the way Maxwell reads the licenses in Maxwell 5.0.2 so it gives fewer problems with older versions, the demo license files or expired temporal ones.

In short: we have moved the license files location to a v5 folder in the same paths as before. Let's see this in detail.

  • If you don't have any activated Maxwell 5 license yet.

You don't have anything special to do; Maxwell will activate and store the license files in the right folder normally.

  • If you already have activated Maxwell 5 licenses.

Please follow these instructions in all your computers where Maxwell is installed:

Mac users can leave the existing licenses in

In the case of MacOS, there's no uninstaller program, so we have to manually delete some files from a couple of folders:

  • The main files of the RLM are in this folder: /Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/

Licenses as they are.

Linux users can do the same in $HOME/Maxwell/, create a new v5 folder and copy all the license files there.

You can do all this before installing the new version and you won't notice the change. Please, make sure to copy and not move the .lic files
  • You can delete everything inside, but take into account that it also includes the floating license files (in the Licenses folder). If you are removing the RLM and not going to install it again on that computer, it should be ok to delete them. You are not losing your licenses by doing this.

  • The RLM installer also saves a file with this name com.nextlimit.maxwellrlm.plist in this folder: /Library/LaunchDaemons/ This one is in charge of starting the RLM server at boot time. You can delete the com.nextlimit.maxwellrlm.plist too. You'll be asked for your administrator password to be able to delete it. The next time you start the computer, the RLM won't run.
